Medicine Wheel

Our Approach

Nelson Therapy and Consulting’s therapeutic model is rooted in Cree teachings from Manitoba, blended with Western therapeutic approaches. Anchored in the holistic framework of the Medicine Wheel, this model supports the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of each child and youth, offering a culturally meaningful and integrative path toward healing.

Emotional (South – Water/Nîpin): The emotional aspect focuses on fostering strong relationships and community connection. Nelson Therapy creates a safe, nurturing space where youth can express and process their emotions through traditional activities like storytelling, beading, and songs, alongside Western methods such as trauma-informed care and Narrative Therapy. This dual approach helps youth heal from emotional pain, develop resilience, and connect with the support of family and community.

Mental (East – Fire/Tâpiskâw): This dimension emphasizes clear thinking and learning. Nelson Therapy combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and psychoeducation with Indigenous teachings to enhance decision-making, coping skills, and personal growth. Youth are guided to gain wisdom from their experiences, blending Western mental health approaches with the traditional knowledge of reflection and awareness.

Physical (West – Earth/Takwâkin): The physical dimension emphasizes well-being through in-house therapeutic activities that promote physical health and body awareness. Nelson Therapy incorporates creative movement, traditional drumming, and physical expression through dance, all conducted within the therapeutic space. These activities are designed to reconnect youth with their bodies and foster physical strength, resilience, and mindfulness. Additionally, Western approaches like guided relaxation, stress management techniques, and self-care practices are integrated to support healthy routines and physical wellness, all within the therapeutic setting.

Spiritual (North – Air/Miyoskamin):
The spiritual aspect centers on connecting with one’s cultural identity, the Creator, and ancestral teachings. Nelson Therapy incorporates traditional ceremonies such as smudging and sweat lodges to foster spiritual growth and healing. Complementing these practices, Person-Centered Therapy supports identity exploration and self-actualization, allowing youth to find balance and purpose in their spiritual journey.

By merging Cree teachings from Manitoba with Western therapeutic models, Nelson Therapy and Consulting offers a holistic, culturally respectful approach that nurtures the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health of youth. This integrative model creates a safe and supportive space for healing, fostering resilience, balance, and well-being.
